Regional Training & Research Institute for Distance and Open Learning
The Regional Training and Research Institute for Distance and Open Learning (RETRIDOL) is an international institute established in August 2003 as a practical response to the growing demand for training and research in ‘Open and Distance Learning’ (ODL). The Institute, a collaboration between the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) and the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), works to ensure the success and maximize the benefits of ODL in the West Africa sub-region.
RETRIDOL is an academic directorate in the National Open University of Nigeria and has the responsibility for undertaking training and development activities and fostering research in ODL for faculty and staff. It is also a regional institute, tasked with providing ODL training, services and opportunities to other emerging ODL Institutions as well as undertaking practice-based research. COL works with the Institute to build competencies and systems for ODL, providing financial support for its activities, while NOUN underwrites all staff and logistical costs.
What is RETRIDOL and what is its purpose?

- An academic arm of NOUN with the specific responsibility for undertaking training and development activities and foster research in ODL
- RETRIDOL ‘s main purpose is to provide training services and opportunities to other emerging ODL Institutions; build a regional network of ODL trainers and researchers; undertake practice-based research within Nigeria and across West Africa; and network with other similar institutions globally.
- To ensure the success of ODL system and maximize the benefits of distance education in the sub-region.
RETRIDOL was established (in August 2003) at NOUN as a practical response to the growing demand for training and research in ODL in collaboration with the Commonwealth of Learning in Vancouver, Canada. The funding of RETRIDOL is expected to be shared equally between NOUN and COL.
RETRIDOL has three broad objectives, which include:
- To build the capacity of West African Higher Education Institutions in ODL by undertaking and promoting staff training and development in the regional countries of operation.
- To engage in and support systematic research activities in ODL to build and provide quality distance education in the West Africa sub-region.
- To foster regional networking, partnership and collaboration for delivery of ODL in the West Africa sub-region and beyond.
To become a globally acclaimed one-stop solution for ODL training, development and research needs in the West Africa sub-region.
To build a regional network of expertise in the West Africa sub-region that is
highly proficient in the delivery of training, development and practice-based
research in ODL
RETRIDOL was established:-
- For the primary purpose of meeting the training and capacity building needs of NOUN and other Open Universities.
- To offer training services and opportunities to other emerging ODL institutions within and across educational sectors of Nigeria and other West African countries.
- To build a regional network of ODL trainers as well as to establish a centre of excellence in training and development.
RETRIDOL has successfully launched one journal called: West African Journal of Open and Flexible Learning (WAJOFEL). Its maiden issue is already out and the second issue is in the pipeline and due to be printed in the very near future. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research-based papers in ODL.
RETRIDOL focuses on building the capacity of ODL researchers in the region. We initiate, execute, and support research into all areas of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and its ancillary fields. We also promote discipline-based researches which have implications for ODL by providing the necessary training in research and support for early-career researchers as well as experienced academics. Our broad research areas include:

- Media and Graphics in Instructional Design
- Information Technology
- Learning how to learn
- Learner Support Systems
- Effective tutoring in ODL
The Institute also provides opportunities for the dissemination of research outcomes through its dedicated website, newsletter and regular journal – West African Journal of Open and Flexible Learning (WAJOFEL)
RETRIDOL’s responsibility extends beyond the shores of Nigeria covering all commonwealth countries within the West African sub-region, precisely Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, The Gambia and Cameroon. The Institute’s activities are supervised by an International Advisory Board called the RETRIDOL Advisory Board (RAB) with members from the Commonwealth of Learning and the West African-sub region.
Between 2004 and 2009 RETRIDOL had organized 25 workshops in Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Sierra Leone, The Gambia and Tanzania.
- First Sub-Regional Stakeholders’ Planning Meeting was held in Lagos, May 2004.
- Between August 2004 and October 2004, 22 Workshops held in Nigeria (16), Ghana (1), Cameroon (3), The Gambia (1) and Tanzania (1).
- In 2005, 180 NOUN staff trained in induction and orientation programmes.
- Between 2005 and 2009, about 50 NOUN staff were trained.
- Since 2006, more than 200 NOUN staff received advanced orientation in e-learning content development skill, etc.
- Since 2005, about 80 NOUN staff received specialized training in instructional designs.
- Some 339 non-NOUN course material writers from other institutions of higher education in Nigeria and other countries trained in open and distance learning.

- July 2010 New Trends in Teacher Education and Professional Development, held in both Lagos and Abuja.
- 21st -24th September 2010, Capacity Building Workshop in Flexible and Blended Approaches to Skills Development for TVET Institutional Heads.
- Regional Leadership Training Workshop for Female Academics in West Africa – 12-14th May 2011.
- E-Learning Workshop in Ghana- May 18th -21st 2011.
- E-Learning Initiative Workshop in Freetown Town, Sierra Leone July 2011.
- Research Development Workshop in the Gambia 2011.
- Workshop on Wiki Educator for Academic Staff -15th-16th Aug.2011.
- One –Day Sensitization Workshop on the mounting of PGDDE Programme in NOUN.
- National Workshop on Tutoring and Effective Management of Feedback in ODL Abuja February 7th -11th 2012
- Some 248 non-NOUN staff from Cameroon, Ghana, Sierra Leone, The Gambia and Tanzania participated in the specialized orientation programmes.
- The RETRIDOL research-base journal “West African Journal for Open and Flexible Learning” was successfully launched with its maiden issue appearing in 2011. Two issues of the journal have recently been released from press.
